Escritora inglesa, la mujer más original de su época. Una escritora prolífica, Montagu es recordada principalmente por sus 52 magníficas cartas en que describe su estadía en Constantinopla, donde su esposo fue embajador desde 1716 hasta 1718. A su regreso introdujeron en Inglaterra la práctica implementada en el Medio Oriente de vacuna contra la viruela. Además fue poeta, ensayista, feminista, excéntrica y amiga de John Gay y Alexander Pope, quien posteriormente se volvió contra ella y la satirizó. Entre sus escritos se encuentran seis "églogas pueblerinas, ingeniosas adaptaciones de Virgilio, un vívido ataque a Jonathan Swift (1734) y ensayos que abordan el feminismo y el cinismo moral de su época.
